San Marcos Senior Apartments Are Smoke Free

For San Diego seniors, finding a place to live during their retirement years can be a challenge. And if you're a non-smoker looking for a smoke free environment the search for a home is even harder. But now there is a new option for retirees living in America's Finest City.

For Trish Potts, the new Woodland Village Apartments in San Marcos has everything she's looking for in a new home.

It's a senior only community with all the amenities of a hotel: pool, fitness center and plenty of entertainment. But it was the one thing it didn't have that finally sold her on the apartment - no cigarette smoking.

"One of the big things that attracted me was that it was non-smoking completely inside and out. And being a former smoker, I thought that was a very good thing," said Potts.

Smoking is completely banned in all common areas of the 204 unit complex. Even inside the apartments, lighting up is a big no-no. But that's just how the tenants like it.

"Some people are coming here just to live here because we are 100 percent smoke free and then the rest of the amenities are just an added perk for them," said Kyle Wilson with Woodland Village Apartments.

The amenities at the complex include a library, billiard room, card tables and wine bar. But don't even think about having a cigarette with your cocktail.

"Absolutely no smoking still in the cocktail lounge and the residents are fine with that," Wilson explained. "But if they want to have their little glass of wine or cocktail at 5 o'clock, it's absolutely permissible."

Units come in one and two bedroom floor plans and are available to anyone 55 years of age or older.

Apartments can be rented month to month for around $1100 a month to just over $1600. Trish says the cost is well worth it with all of the activities. The 69-year-old says she feels like she's constantly on vacation.

"I've been on several cruises, and I've been in resort areas and this is a cross between a cruise and a resort area," Potts said.

The complex is for independent and active seniors. It does not provide any type of medical care.

SAN MARCOS, Calif. -- An entire community in San Marcos is saying no to smoking.

Woodland Village, a new senior living apartment complex, is 100 percent smoke-free. There are 204 apartments on the 7-acre site, making it the largest nonsmoking apartment complex in San Diego.

Kyle Wilson, the activities director, said that smoking is prohibited both inside and outside the complex.

Woodland Village opened in July.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Woodland Village Residents Breathe Easy at San Marcos Property

New apartment complex offers a 100 percent smoke-free community for "leading edge" Baby Boomers.

SAN MARCOS, CA ---- Woodland Village, a new 55-year-old plus apartment complex in the final stages of construction in beautiful North County San Diego today announced that the entire seven-acre site, including all of the 204 Spanish-styled apartments, will be 100 percent smoke-free, making it the largest non-smoking apartment complex in San Diego County.

"Creating a 100 percent smoke-free community provides a new amenity and service level

for our residents," said Craig Engstrand, Managing Member of Woodland Parkway Development LLC. "We’re catering to people who are more concerned with the quality of their lives, living healthier and more active lifestyles, and yearn for this type of environment."

According to the American Lung Association of California, tobacco use is still the number one preventable cause of death and disease in this country, killing nearly 40,000 Californians every year. The demand for non-smoking communities continues to rise with new information from the Surgeon General on the hazards of secondary smoke.

Many restaurants and other public places across the country have moved to a breathe-easier environment and hotels are going in the same direction, but most apartment communities only set aside a few areas or apartments as non-smoking zones.

“With the deaths of prominent celebrities like Peter Jennings and Dana Reeve, more and more people are recognizing the health problems associated with smoking,” said Nick Mikulsky, president of Comfort Property Management. “Woodland Village is the logical next step for those seeking a clean, fresh, and healthy community.”

Woodland Village in San Marcos is leading the way to a healthier and happier lifestyle by offering a 100 percent smoke-free environment. More than two thirds of apartment residents in California would like nonsmoking sections in their buildings and limits on smoking in outdoor areas such as the pool, according to a 2004 survey of 602 apartment residents by The Center for Tobacco Policy & Organizing, a project of the American Lung Association of California.
